Never Hire a Hero

NEVER HIRE A HERO by Regina Scott
SERIES: Fortune’s Brides: Guarding Her Heart #3
GENRE: Historical/Regency Romance (Clean)
PUBLISHER: Edwards and Williams
RELEASE DATE: December 11, 2023
PAGES: 237

Three children and a marriage of convenience may be his biggest challenge yet

A former elite soldier, Stephen Roth was trained to be ruthless as he served as bodyguard for kings and princes. So why would his English patroness, Lady Belfort, and her cat, Fortune, arrange for him to take a position as the tutor to the heir of Alldene Castle and the boy’s siblings? And why does the children’s mother, Lady Alldene, look at him with shining eyes, as if he could be some sort of hero? This was not the sort of challenge he bargained for!

A peer in her own right, Thea, Countess of Alldene, was raised in Alldene Castle and taught how to rule over it. But nothing prepared her for the death of her husband and the villainy of the man he appointed as guardian for her children. If a tutor with a razor-sharp gaze will prevent that man from taking her sons away from her, she’s willing to put up with Roth’s rough-shod ways.

But the castle holds a secret that may prove Thea’s undoing. When danger threatens, she turns to the one man who might be able to keep them all safe. Could a marriage of convenience over Christmas prove that heroes can turn up in the least likely places?

If you like warm, witty historical romances, with a touch of mystery, then you’ll love this historical romance by an award-winning, bestselling author.

“All readers who love Regency and historical romances need to pick up stories by Regina Scott. The author has never disappointed me. I am very happy to recommend any of her novels.” – Huntress Reviews

Regina Scott guest post

that kissing bough

by Regina Scott, author of Never Hire a Hero

For as long as I can remember, my family has hung a sprig of mistletoe (plastic, alas!) somewhere near the front door for Christmas. You can be sure everyone from Grandma to the family dog gets a quick smooch! But during the Regency period, the custom was a little different and often involved a kissing bough instead.

Mistletoe grew mostly in the western and southwestern parts of Britain. However, if you had friends or relatives there, you could certainly arrange to have some sent to you via the mail coach. There is also some evidence that mistletoe was used mostly in farm yards and kitchens, in essence among the lower classes. Like today, it was hung in doorways and watched by young gentlemen in hopes of catching a pretty girl to kiss, and usually on the cheek. In some places, it was the custom to pick a berry for each kiss. When all the berries were gone, no more kisses could be taken.

The kissing bough, on the other hand, was a more elaborate hanging structure made from evergreens, apples, paper flowers, and dolls representing Joseph, Mary, and baby Jesus. Wire and ribbon often held the decorations together.  Like the mistletoe, the bough would have hung from a doorway, over a doorway, or from a chandelier. And it could be used for more than a quick peck on the cheek. Ask Stephen Roth, the hero of my December release, Never Hire a Hero. Roth has entered into a marriage of convenience with his former employer, the Countess of Alldene, so he can protect her and her three children. But Christmas, with all its wonders, is drawing closer.

“I see you have been busy,” he said as they came to a stop in the middle of the hall. A merry fire burned in the grate, and someone had draped a swag of evergreen about the neck of the suit of armor, as if the knight had decided to wear a scarf.

Thea smiled. “Audra and I had fun creating the decorations. So did Mrs. Willoughby and Waters, it seems.”

“And that?” He tipped his chin toward the ceiling.

She glanced up. They were standing under the kissing bough. It hung there, so innocent.

So compelling.

She swallowed as she dropped her gaze to his. “Do you know what that is?”

“I am aware of the English custom. It is a kissing bough, is it not?”

She nodded.

“You have been kind to follow my customs,” he murmured. “I should honor yours as well.”

Slowly, softly, he lowered his head and kissed her.

The gentle pressure spread warmth through her, raising hopes, dreams, she had thought dead and buried.

He stole her breath.

And, she feared, her heart.

Will there be a sprig of mistletoe or a kissing bough at your home this Christmas?

This sounds like a wonderful Christmas time story. No mistletoe in my decor but I love it in books and movies!
