it’s all about Jesus

by Jennifer Spredemann, author of A Christmas Amish Courtship

Merry Christmas, readers!

When Carrie asked me to share a Christmas-themed blog post, I mulled over what I would write about then promptly rejected each idea. I wanted something from the Lord, so I prayed that He would give me a special message.

Knowing that I would submit the post today, I hoped that He would deliver soon (LOL) or I wouldn’t have anything. Well, the moment I woke up this morning, God laid something on my heart! He truly is amazing, isn’t He, and ALWAYS on time!

Without further ado…

Pondering all things Christmas…no, not just the manger, or the star, or the shepherds, or the wise men. But ALL things surrounding this holiday. How do other elements of the season (Santa, Snowmen, The Grinch, etc.) apply to the birth and life of our Saviour?

Well, I’m convinced that God wastes nothing. Even the things the world throws at us or what the devil does to take our eyes off Jesus, the true Reason for the season.

Here’s what I’ve got. I hope it’s a blessing!

The Christmas tree – a symbol of the method (the cross) of which our Lord would deliver us from the power of death and hell. He took the curse upon Himself, so we could have eternal life. Corresponding verses: “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.” Gal. 3:13-14

The red door with a wreath – Red is a symbol of Christ’s blood shed for us. The door represents Jesus Christ, the only way to Heaven. The green wreath is a never-ending circle, a picture of eternal life.

Verses: “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”  John 10:9

“…by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.” Heb. 9:12b

The Grinch – The Grinch represents the devil, who comes to kill, steal, and destroy. It also represents Herod, who tried to kill baby Jesus.

Verses: “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10

“And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.” Matt. 2:13

Santa – He’s a picture of Christ (i.e. He sees you when you’re sleeping. He knows when you’re awake. He knows if you’ve been bad or good, so be good for goodness’ sake. He lives in the north. He gives gifts.)

“Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness. 2Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.” Ps. 48: 1-2

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights…” James 1:17a

The gifts – God’s gift to us, His grace

“…he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. 8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God…” Eph. 2:7b-8

The snow/snowman – our righteous state before God if we have been saved/brevity of life

Verses: Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. Isaiah 1:18

“(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)” 2 Cor. 6:2

“For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” James 4:14b

The lights – These represent Jesus, and our purpose as God’s children here on earth

Verses: “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” John 8:12

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matt. 5:14-16

So, you see, Christmas truly is all about Jesus!
