by Lara Van Hulzen, author of An Angel for Christmas

Christmas is my favorite time of year. I’ll admit, I’m the type that starts listening to Christmas music early in November and watches as many Hallmark Christmas movies as possible. I do have a strong love for Thanksgiving, however, so I do not decorate until the week after, giving time to truly soak in all I am thankful for and all the blessings poured out throughout the year.

An Angel For Christmas is the fourth book in my Endicott’s of Silver Bay series. Angelica is the main female character and the youngest of the four Endicott siblings. As much as I enjoyed writing the other siblings and their stories, I connected with Angelica a bit more. I’m the youngest in my family so that was part of it, I’m sure. But I love her energy and her optimism. I also love how she sees a side of Garrett that not too many see.

Garrett has lived in Silver Bay his whole life. He’s a responsible son and doting single father. He’s not the grouch he seems to be, just more serious with a lot on his mind. When Angelica is able to see past his guarded exterior, she throws him off in the best way possible.

I think I love writing Christmas stories because the holiday truly does have a sense of hope more than other times of the year. There seems to be more of a willingness to be open to new relationships, new experiences.

And I think my favorite Christmas tradition is decorating the tree. I got married at Christmas so I received quite a few ornaments as gifts. This spurred me to be intentional that each ornament have meaning. Almost all of the ornaments on my tree have a connection to a memory or a trip. Every time I travel, I buy a Christmas ornament to remember the event. Of course, we also have the ones the kids made when they were little, which sparks much teasing among the three of them, as well as laughter over fond memories.

I had fun writing the scene where Angelica is looking at her Christmas tree, thinking of how she enjoys bright colors that aren’t traditional, her tree a hodgepodge of hues and baubles. I can relate. My husband not so much. He prefers a tree with perfectly set décor, as well as all matching colors and sizes. Our family tree is an eclectic mosaic of craziness that he has come to love over our thirty years together. And I love it. It is a symbol of our history as a family that shines bright in our home every Christmas.

May this holiday time be filled with much joy, hope, and love and may you have time to curl up under a favorite blanket and read.

I love to hear from readers – please share your favorite holiday tradition.

Happy Reading,

Lara

I’m looking forward to reading ‘An Angel for Christmas’ by Lara Van Hulzen because the title suggests a heartwarming and uplifting holiday story. I’m particularly drawn to books that capture the essence of the holiday spirit, and the inclusion of an angel in the storyline hints at a tale of hope, miracles, and perhaps a touch of divine intervention. Van Hulzen’s ability to weave a narrative that can inspire and bring joy is something I’m excited about, especially during the festive season. I anticipate a story that not only entertains but also reminds us of the deeper meanings and joys of Christmas.

One of my favorite holiday traditions is baking and decorating gingerbread cookies with my family. It’s a fun and creative activity that everyone looks forward to each year. We spend an afternoon mixing dough, cutting out shapes, and then decorating the cookies with various icings and candies. It’s not just about the baking; it’s about the laughter, teamwork, and the festive atmosphere that surrounds us while we’re together in the kitchen. This tradition is a cherished part of our holiday celebrations, bringing warmth and sweetness to the season.

Having things decorated in a pretty way is a nice Christmas tradition for me! (The actual decorating…not so much!)

I love reading Christmas books all year long. One of our favorite traditions is getting together with family and friends and making homemade ravioli to be enjoyed on Christmas Eve.

One of my favorite traditions is driving around to see all the Christmas lights. Some people are so creative!
