simplifying Christmas

by Lynn Weathington, author of Finding Baby Jesus

I tried to simplify Christmas this year…

Already, I can hear the laughter in my head. What a preposterous goal! It all started with a snowman. Granted, not just any snowman, but the ideal one, the perfect one that would sit on my front porch and greet all those who passed by or stopped for a while. My sister, Lesia, tried to give me a snowman. He was nice, but I wanted an old-fashioned-looking one. I visited stores (during Black Friday, no less), and the only snowmen I encountered were wrong. He needed to sit on the porch, not beside the porch in the yard. Finally, I began searching online, and after hours of research, I found one. Our local hardware store’s website had one that fit the criteria, but the shipping costs made it cost-prohibitive. So, I went to that old standby, Ebay, where I found the perfect specimen, made of (almost) indestructible material, who could sit on my front porch in all his glorious luminosity.

Isn’t this a fine example of what happens every Christmas? We get wrapped up (no pun intended) in perfection…that one-of-a-kind gift, that special décor, a perfect tree, the delicious menu, and on we go. We lose sight of what truly matters as we strive for lofty objectives that exasperate us.

Sometimes, we get the best story ideas from things that happen in real life. Years ago, I lost Baby Jesus. The box he was traveling in was damaged, and he slipped through a hole during shipping. When unpacking the carton, I had all the characters in the nativity set except the most important one. Initially frustrated, I ordered a replacement, and all was well, but it made me ponder…if I lost Baby Jesus, did someone find him?

Isn’t that what Christmas is all about? Finding our Savior? He’s there, underneath the rolls of wrapping paper, presents, Christmas cards, trees, ornaments, and fake snowmen. He’s been waiting for each of us, just as the angel told the shepherds, as recorded in the gospel of Luke: “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord!”

My newest book is a Christmas novella, “Finding Baby Jesus.” It focuses on two diverse young women: Leigh Day, whose nativity is missing a key character, and Lucy Grant, who saves a tiny bundle after it falls from a delivery truck. Each one struggling with life-altering circumstances, they inhabit the same small town in Georgia.

Will Baby Jesus find his way back into the nativity in time for Christmas?

I liked the author’s note about what happened with her and how it made her think of the real meaning of Christmas.
