Worth the Messy

by Amy R. Anguish, author of Mama Dated Santa

Do you do holiday baking? I have always loved making loaves of pumpkin or banana bread to give away to dear friends or teachers. And since having children, of course there needs to be cookies for Santa (and a few for us too). My kids will take any excuse they can find to decorate cookies—lots of icing and sprinkles, please.

But have you ever started a baking project, looked around, and then cringed at the mess left behind? Flour almost always ends up on the table or counter—or both. And sometimes the floor too. Did you know sprinkles roll? All the way across the table and into the next room sometimes. How about that icing? Did it end up smeared more places than just cookies?

And that’s not even counting the dirty dishes.

Needless to say, baking can sometimes be more trouble than it’s worth. Or is it?

Because even though it drives me crazy to have to clean up the mess behind my kids (and me), let’s be honest. The children are so thrilled with how the cookies turned out—asking if they can take one to their teachers or our neighbor, showing them off to daddy, and deciding which one to save for Santa. Doesn’t their joy override all the chaos?

Because this is such a huge part of my holiday life, when I started writing my Christmas story, Mama Dated Santa, I knew it needed to be there too. Especially since my main character Trudy has a four-year-old nephew who loves baking cookies. And of course, there is a mess. But you know what? That’s one of my favorite scenes in the whole book.

Making messes is a part of life. And messes can be cleaned up. It’s the memories made and the joy of the finished project that count. And those are always there, even if the cookies come out a bit uneven in baking and/or sprinkle application.

And the romantic part of the middle of that scene? Well, that’s just icing on the cookie, so to speak. 😉

So, how about your family? What do you like to bake at Christmas? Do you have a fun baking mess story to share with us? Do you love reading about characters baking?

This looks like a cute story. I’m not a baker, but I learned the hard way that when you scorch chocolate in the microwave, there is no salvaging it.

When I was about 12 or 13 years old, I was in a Christmas program for school. I lip-synced to “I Saw Mama Kissing Santa Claus.” So now I need to read MAMA DATED SANTA to go along with the song. teehee
I did used to bake at holiday time, but it’s been many years. I have done several cookie exchanges over the years. And I’ve baked cookies, banana nut bread and made fudge to give to friends and neighbors.

I ued to go all out with baking for the holidays. Now that I don’t have anyone to bake for I just buy what I’m in the mood to eat. This sounds like such a fun story. I’m looking forward to reading it.
