The Rare Jewel of Everleigh Wheaton

SERIES: The Treasures of Halstead Manor #1
GENRE: Romantic Women’s Fiction (Christian)
RELEASE DATE: January 16, 2024
PAGES: 304

In her search for a rare gem, will Everleigh end up uncovering the true treasure of her heart?

Personal care nurse Everleigh Wheaton knows it only takes a few well-placed lies to ruin a reputation. She’s experienced it time and time again. But there’s a silver lining to repeatedly proving herself: she’s confident and self-reliant.

When she loses yet another job and an enigmatic stranger offers her a potential way out, she’s game. After all, she loves a good mystery, and an invitation to visit the legendary Halstead Manor is irresistible. But she’s not about to let her guard down–especially with the other women who received the same invitation.

A strange voice on the phone tells them he’s gathered the three of them to work together as treasure hunters. The first assignment requires Everleigh to be a traveling nurse for retired FBI agent Gertrude Levine, who has one cold case she just can’t let go of: the Florentine diamond that went missing when the Austrian Empire fell.

With Everleigh’s keen ability to solve puzzles, Natalie Daughtry’s vast knowledge of history, and Brooke Sumner’s connections to the antiques world, they’re bound to track down the diamond. Except that Gertie’s nephew, Niles Butler, doesn’t trust Everleigh’s innocent act . . . even if he finds himself falling for her. Worse, Everleigh’s walls of self-preservation may doom the entire team.

Hints of real-life historical events combined with contemporary characters make this first book in the Treasures of Halstead Manor series a masterful blend of romance, mystery, and strong female friendships. Readers of authors like Denise Hunter and Nicole Deese who enjoy unfolding relationships and the organic discovery of God’s love will relish this new series.

Susan L. Tuttle author interview

Hi! Welcome to the blog!

Susan: DOGS!! I love that dogs want to be around their humans. Cats tend to be like my young adults—they love me but don’t want me to cuddle them 🙂

Carrie: hahaha so true!

Susan: UNDER. The toilet paper stays close to the wall and out of the way. My OCD mind prefers it this way!

Carrie: yes!!! Same!! We are in a minority though, my friend lol

Susan: COKE. My mama always gave this to me when I was sick and that made it a comfort drink for me 🙂

Carrie: see, I knew we were kindred spirits 🙂

Susan: While I read both, I’ll always be a PRINT girl. Nothing compares to the feel of a real book in my hands or the scent of one.

Carrie: necessity (read: I’m getting to ‘that age’) dictates that I read mostly by ebook these days so I can enlarge the font haha BUT there IS nothing like the feel of a real book in your hands!

Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?

Susan: Oooh, teleportation! There are so many places in the world I’d love to see, especially while writing. I could just drop into a location, walk around for an hour, and then beam myself back home. And should my kids and (someday) grandchildren ever live far away, I could still visit or babysit for an afternoon on just a whim.

Carrie: YES PLEASE!!! I really hope that when Jesus returns our new bodies have the ability to teleport.

Q: When you walk into a bookstore, where do you head first?

Susan: Fiction section. Always the fiction section. I like biographies, history, and study guides, but I never head for them before I peruse the stories. Historical, mystery, thriller, romance (give me all the romance) … I adore storytelling.

Carrie: ‘give me all the romance’ – you knew I would wholeheartedly agree, didn’t you? lol

Q: If I asked your characters to describe YOU as an author, what would they say?

Susan: She’s her own worst critic. She’s an optimistic pessimist. She sings all the time (typically showtunes or 80s ballads … or songs she makes up.) She cracks herself up with bad jokes and silly puns. She stares at the computer screen often and talks to herself and her dog a lot. She is completely in love with Jesus.

Carrie: oh i love this answer ♥

Q: What surprised you about The Rare Jewel of Everleigh Wheaton or your characters as you wrote their story?

Susan: The hero in my story, Niles, has a tattoo—which I didn’t know until I was writing an early scene where it peeked out from his shirt. At that point I only knew there was a tattoo, but I had no idea what that tattoo actually was. The first time Everleigh catches sight of the full thing was the first time I did too. And I loved it, because it was a sweet moment between them and for my hero’s story. A simple scene that gave me a deeper glimpse into Niles.

Carrie: oh how fun! (and also… i still don’t understand this about writers hahaha but I love y’all anyway)

Q: Did you have the whole plot outlined before you started writing The Rare Jewel of Everleigh Wheaton, or did you let the characters dictate what came next?

Susan: I had a general idea of who my characters were and that they’d be searching for the Florentine Diamond, but I had no idea where it was, where they’d travel to, or who they’d encounter until I started writing. I am a cross between a plotter and a pantser when it comes to writing.

Carrie: that keeps it entertaining for you too!

Q: What is one of your favorite quotes from the book & why do you love it?

Susan: There’s a scene where Gertie (an older character) is talking to Everleigh about fairness in life that really struck a chord in me. It ends with this quote, “I’m thankful God doesn’t balance the scales where we’re concerned, because his grace far outweighs our sins.”

These words stuck with me because it was such a reminder that there is nothing we can do that his grace doesn’t cover. It’s unmerited. There’s nothing we can do to earn it. And it points to his massive love for us. He paid an enormous price for our sins so that we can spend eternity with him. Nothing about it was fair, and I am so very thankful for that because he paid a debt I never could pay.

Carrie: amen!! So thankful!

Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.

Susan: The Rare Jewel of Everleigh Wheaton releases on January 16th, and it’s Book 1 in The Treasures of Halstead Manor series. Book 2, The Novel Adventures of Natalie Daughtry is due on January 22nd! So I’m working hard to finish that book and hand it in. I’ll start on Book 3 shortly after, along with a few other writing projects that I hope to send off to my agent. Writing, writing, and more writing … which I love.

I’ve been seeing this book EVERYWHERE! I just finished my first book by this author (Out of the Blue) and am anxious to read another from her.

  2. Pam K.

I read the prequel novella and enjoyed it very much. It included an excerpt of The Rare Jewel of Everleigh Wheaton and I was intrigued.
