12 Days of Mandy Reno by Regina Rudd Merrick

Small town Kentucky. Swoony contractor. Compelling young widow. Her adorable twins. Yummy food. Secret tunnels. Old houses. Heart-in-your-throat suspense. And… of course… romance. Count me in! I fell in love with Rebuilding Joy right away, charmed by the author’s warm writing voice that had me wrapping myself up in the story and the layered characters who immediately felt like people I’d want to know in real life. I haven’t read the other two books in this series (yet) but the author does a good job of summarizing the important events to catch us up while also whetting my appetite to go back and read them.

Darcy’s character really drew me in – the young military widow with a family restaurant to run and precocious twins (whom the author captures so endearingly!) to raise. I loved her personality and watching her blossom around people she’s comfortable with. Her relationship with God has suffered from the blows that life has dealt her, and I found her journey in this book to be quite touching and a natural extension of her character.

And then there is Del who has it bad for Darcy but is careful not to move too fast for a variety of reasons. Once he decides the time is right though, be prepared to swoon because goodness he’s appealing when he sets his mind to kissing and declarations. He’s such a gentleman and protective of Darcy without stifling her (even if she gets huffy about it lol) but oh be still my heart when he babysits Darcy’s kids. If I hadn’t fallen for him long before that, those scenes would have certainly been the tipping point.

Bottom Line: In Rebuilding Joy, Regina Rudd Merrick weaves an entertaining romance with charming characters (including lots of time with Lisa and Nick if you’ve read Heart Restoration) and well-crafted suspense. I really enjoyed getting to know the Reno family and their friends, and I was so caught up in watching Darcy & Del dance around each other that I was – pleasantly – taken by surprise more than once in the tunnel case. Including how it all turns out. I didn’t want to put this story down (so I didn’t) and I’m eager for more visits to Clementville and the Renos!

(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. In the interest of full disclosure, the company I used to own was hired to promote the original edition of this book in 2021. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.)

My Rating: 4.5 stars / loved it!

KissingBook Level: 3+ / will forget to breathe on occasion
