Evelyn refuses to cower to grief. She may not understand God’s mysterious ways, but she has never questioned Him—until the circus fire.

The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus train chugs into Hartford, Connecticut, on a sweltering day one month after the Allies invaded Normandy. Among the roustabouts is a reluctant clown, Hank Webb. He may hide from his murky past behind grease paint as Fraidy Freddie, but God wants to offer Hank a chance to be found. Though first, what little Hank believes about God will endure a fiery trial.

On Thursday, July 6, 1944, a devastating blaze of unknown origins consumes the circus tent along with Evelyn’s hopes and Hank’s anonymity.

Rhonda Dragomir interview

Hi Rhonda! Welcome to the blog!

Rhonda: Apples, because I have GERD, and oranges have so much acid my stomach rebels. But better than either is bananas.

Carrie: As long as that banana is in bread, yes 😉

Rhonda: Winter, because summer makes me sweat. I hate sweat. Wait…I write historical romance. Dahling, I simply LOATHE perspiration.

Carrie: haha i love it! And i agree!

Rhonda: Netflix, because sometimes I’m not in the mood for love. Once in a while, I need to watch Air Force One and hear Harrison Ford growl, “Get off my plane.”

Carrie: oh my goodness, yes. One of THE BEST movie lines ever.

Rhonda: I’m a Pepsi girl through and through. Coke is a joke.

Carrie: oh Rhonda… you were doing so well answering these questions. It’s ok, I won’t hold it against you 😉 LOL

Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?

Rhonda: Smiling and saying something nice when I’d rather punch lights out.

Carrie: hahahaha except for the Pepsi thing, I really think we are kindred souls lol

Q: Other than the Bible, what are five of your most cherished books?

Rhonda:

  1. “Hinds Feet on High Places” by Hannah Hurnard
  2. “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” by C.S. Lewis
  3. “Redeeming Love” by Francine Rivers
  4. “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett
  5. “The Velveteen Rabbit” by Margery Williams

Carrie: oh those are such excellent choices!

Q: What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever Googled while researching a book?

Rhonda: I once researched how knights could use the bathroom while wearing armor.

Carrie: hmm… i’m not sure i want to know LOL

Q: Which of your main characters in When the Flames Ravaged is most like you?

Rhonda: My heroine, Evelyn, is most like me. She is torn apart by grief and worry, but she puts on a patient front to the world. She tries to be polite and helpful to others even when she’s falling apart. She struggles inwardly with things she’d never voice aloud because she always wants to say the right thing.

Carrie: i want to hug both of you ♥

Q: Were there any songs that inspired you as you wrote When the Flames Ravaged?

Rhonda: I liberally sprinkled my text with words from William Cowper’s hymn, “God Moves in a Mysterious Way.”

Carrie: at first i thought i wasn’t familiar with that one but then I googled the lyrics and realized I do know it but it’s definitely not one I grew up singing a lot.

Q: If Hollywood wanted to produce When the Flames Ravaged as a movie, who would you want to be cast as the lead roles?

Rhonda: Chris Pine would be Hank, and Jennifer Lawrence would be Evelyn.

Carrie: ooo i like!

Q: What do you most want readers to take away from When the Flames Ravaged?

Rhonda: I want readers to know that when trauma and terror strike, it’s best to run to God rather than turn away from Him.

Carrie: amen ♥

Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.

Rhonda: I’m currently working on The Duke’s Dilemma, a Regency romance featuring a Scottish soldier who learns he’s the heir to a dukedom in England. When he scouts out the situation incognito, he meets a young woman in need who might imperil his quest to regain his title.
