From author Lena Gregory comes a hunt for more than just treasure…

Danika Delany is loving running her uncle’s old fashioned malt shop on eastern Long Island and putting her own modern spin on the treats they serve. Life is finally looking up for her! That is, until local billionaire Maxwell Crumbholtz dies and leaves his fortune in the form of a treasure hunt. Chaos descends on Watchogue, and Dani and the rest of the gang from the Coffee & Cream Café join the melee when they enter the contest, try to decipher the clues, and go in search of the treasure. But Dani digs up more than she expected when she discovers a dead body buried instead of a treasure! To make matters worse, a witness claims to have seen Dani at the scene of the murder. Now, instead of a four-billion-dollar payday, Dani is on the hunt for a killer.

I am having so much fun reading this cozy mystery series by Lena Gregory. I love the setting, the premise, the mysteries, the occasional moments of hilarity… but it’s the characters that I most anticipate seeing again each time. Their relationship dynamics keep a big grin on my face as I’m reading, and I am already eager for whatever this crew gets up to next.

In Double Scoop of Murder, all of Watchogue is abuzz with a 4 billion dollar treasure hunt that’s got not only the locals teaming up to track it down but also drawing money seekers from all over. For readers, this means we are treated to time with all our series faves as well as young YouTubers, older vanlifers and even people closely associated with the man whose inheritance is up for grabs in the treasure hunt – colorful characters one and all. I was delighted to see Eli continuing to fit in with Dani and her inner circle, and his endearing enthusiasm for all things computer, cafe, and sleuthing adds so much heart (and humor) to the series. Although… I think if I had to spend much time with him in real life I’d be exhausted haha. Also delighting me in this book? The off-the-charts chemistry between Dani and the man she’s currently dating but also ARGH because of the torture of almost-kisses haha. Seriously, this guy had some super swoony lines that had me fanning wildly a time or two, and I can’t imagine how Dani doesn’t just spontaneously combust on the spot. On the flip side, having him at the family dinner had me chuckling out loud.

The murder mystery in Double Scoop of Murder is just as layered as one of Eli’s ice cream concoctions, and I especially enjoyed how the inclusion of the treasure hunt element gave us puzzles to decipher on two separate fronts – where is the next treasure clue? and… who killed the victim? Red herrings abound in both the treasure hunt and the murder investigation, and they kept me guessing as to which were clues I needed to hold onto and which could be dismissed as misdirection. Dani, Gwen (BFF), Eli, and Meghan (her sister) make a great sleuthing team – each with different strengths that they bring to the table – but that doesn’t mean they always get it right. Something that just makes them all the more relatable for those of us who are surprised by the book’s twists, too.

Bottom Line: Laughter, ice cream, coffee, treasure, family, friends, romance, and murder. You might think at first glance that one of these things is not like the other, but you would be wrong because when master author Lena Gregory is at the helm, all the threads come together perfectly. Double Scoop of Murder is highly entertaining, lots of fun, and the perfect mystery to curl up with this weekend! The quirky characters are intrinsically likable and feel like they could be our own neighbors, certainly people I’d want to hang out with in real life if they actually existed… and, you know, if murder didn’t follow them around. Can’t wait for my next visit to the Coffee and Cream Cafe!
