With World War II brimming in the background, Louise leaves everything she’s ever known in Colorado to support her family by working in her brother’s diner in St. Louis. Harboring secret pain from her past, Louise meets Dude and her “I don’t need a man” mentality begins to shift. Together they uncover danger, heartbreak, and sacrificial love.

This short story is based loosely on the author’s grandparents’ lives as a tribute to the fierce loyalty and love they had for one another.

I really loved meeting Louise and Dude on the pages of In the Shadows of Sacrifice by Heather Tabers – that enjoyment magnified all the more because they were loosely based on her own grandparents. What great characters, so full of personality! Their compelling stories of needing to take care of their respectively large families after loss and economic struggles particularly resonated with me. My grandfather was only eighteen when he lost his dad in a coal mining accident and became instantly responsible for his mother & eight other siblings. In fact, my grandfather lost his hair overnight from the stress, so I could definitely relate to the emotions and pressure that Louise and Dude experienced. It’s not something that’s talked about much in historical fiction that covers the time after the Great Depression, during the early days of World War 2, but it was a reality for many and I appreciated that the author shines a light on it in her story.

I also liked the difference shown between Louise and Dude in how they handled these similar pressures. We can immediately see Dude’s peace and joy, and as the story progresses we learn that the source of both is his relationship with God. In contrast, Louisa is trying to do it all on her own, bearing the full burden of her family’s future and all the stress and exhaustion that goes along with that. I loved their conversation on this subject –

“Trust His plan, Lou. It’s always better than our own. No matter what God asks us to sacrifice, nothing could be greater than Him sacrificing His own son.”

It’s something that all of us can take to heart, no matter our current situations.

Bottom Line: In the Shadows of Sacrifice by Heather Tabers may be a short story but it’s packed with well-developed layers and vibrant characters. Louisa and Dude are delightful to follow through this story, and I also came to really appreciate Louisa’s brother & sister-in-law too. The way this story ends, while satisfying, also has me wondering where they all might go from here. I would love to read more about these characters and would welcome a full length featuring them again, as well as maybe more of Louisa’s family. And the best part of In the Shadows of Sacrifice? It’s FREE!

(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.)

My Rating: 5 stars / loved it!
