Peril in Pink by Sydney LeighPERIL IN PINK by Sydney Leigh
A Hudson Valley B&B Mystery

GENRE: Cozy Mystery (Clean)
PUBLISHER: Crooked Lane
RELEASE DATE: March 19, 2024
PAGES: 301

Everything is coming up rosé for innkeeper Jess Byrne until a murder on opening weekend gives her B&B’s killer vibe a whole new meaning.

Schitt’s Creek meets Only Murders in the Building in this sparkling debut mystery.

It’s the grand opening of The Pearl B&B in Hudson Valley, and owner Jess Byrne has prepared the ultimate, Insta-worthy welcome, complete with her ex-boyfriend—reality singing sensation Lars Armstrong—performing live. As guests check in and mimosas are poured, Lars arrives with his stepdad-turned-manager Bob in tow. But things go south when Bob is found dead, and Lars is the prime suspect.

After a desperate plea from Lars, and knowing the reputation of her B&B is at stake, Jess agrees to help clear Lars’ name, but the more she digs, the less sure she is that he’s innocent. Especially when he’s found at the scene of another murder.

With the guests under lockdown, the B&B in the press for all the wrong reasons, and a killer on the loose, Jess is in over her head. With the help of her best friend and business partner Kat, Jess is determined to uncover the truth before Lars is put behind bars and The Pearl is permanently cancelled.

Peril in Pink by Sydney Leigh is everything I hoped it would be when I first saw the fun cover! This cozy mystery kicks off a new series featuring two BFF’s who have started a new B&B that feels more like a resort – and they’ve catered to the Instagram & TikTok crowd so you know there’s hashtags flying around left and right. Usually that gets old really fast with me, but in this case the author utilized it just the right amount and at the right moments to contribute to the overall vibe of the setting, story, and characters.

Jess & her business partner Kat are hilarious together. It’s easy to tell that they’re best friends, even if the author hadn’t already given us that information. I loved their banter and the kind of camaraderie that comes from knowing each other well, and this moment below captures them perfectly (and had me chuckling):

She reached her hand out and tried to tuck my hair behind my ear. I swatted her away like a pesky fly. “What are you doing?”

She tried again. “I’m trying to show you a bit of tenderness, but you’re making it very difficult.” I flinched, and we entered a hand flap smackdown until eventually she gave up.

The other characters who will undoubtedly be recurring include Jess’ charming brother Nate and his ‘granola girl’ wife Sarah, their powerhouse mother, and their quirky, hippie Aunt Marnie. Oh and a swoony detective who is clearly attracted to Jess and has delicious romantic potential for the future. Each of these helped establish the overall tone of the series, as well as adding layers to this first story.

Poor Jess, though. Her opening weekend is not going the way she hoped. Instead of basking in happy guests and social media tags, she’s dodging a rising body count and trying to save her rock star ex-boyfriend from a murder rap. She’s got a B&B full of suspects, and the mystery’s layers only deepen the more she investigates. I enjoyed tagging along as she sleuthed and, while I had some inklings of whodunit, I was an equal opportunity suspecter of many characters and ended up surprised by several elements of the end result. (Yes, I can create new words like ‘suspecter’ if I want to lol)

Bottom Line: Peril in Pink by Sydney Leigh is fun and snappy and full of heart. The posh B&B setting brings some California vibes to New York, and it attracts a bevy of eccentric characters who make great suspects in the well-plotted mystery. The author’s writing voice sparkles with wit and talent, instantly drawing readers in and keeping them charmed by the smart dialogue and engaging narrative. I loved the characters, especially Jess & Kat (and hunky detective James) and I look forward to reading more books in this series.

Reviewer’s Note: This is a completely clean read, but readers of this blog may want to be aware that there are implications of extramarital intimate activity and brief mentions of tarot cards and white witches.

(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the publisher. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.)

My Rating: 4.5 stars / loved it!
