“With stellar storytelling skills, Tina Shelton reminds us that while love isn’t always enough to erase the hurts, it’s the only way to survive them. A powerful read!”

Julie Cantrell, New York Times & USA Today best-selling author of Perennials

When her husband dies, Charlotte can’t face the things she’s done that could tear her family apart. So she drops a goodbye letter in the cookie jar and flees south to escape everything–her life, her three daughters, the mistakes she’s made, and the secrets eating her alive.

Now Gracey and her sisters are alone on Chicago’s South Side with nothing but their home and belongings. They’re doing everything they can to stay together, but young teens aren’t meant to parent themselves. Their close-knit Black community gathers around them to keep them fed and clothed with the utilities on, but that’s not enough to fix the damage of abandonment.

Hundreds of miles away, Charlotte is struggling to keep her own head above water. She’s made a close friend who talks to her about God in a way Charlotte’s never heard before. But when her demons catch up to her, the shaky peace she tried to build shatters. Even if she’s able to find the courage to embrace motherhood again, will it be enough to save the family she left behind?

Tina Shelton interview

Hi! Welcome to the blog!

Tina: Apples are so much more fun. Apples and peanut butter, apple pie, apple crumble, apple sauce, apple cider…I could go on

Carrie: mmm yes please! Hang on while I go get an apple & peanut butter now…

Tina: I love the warmth of summer, the long days, the sweets, the fruit, the smell of flowers, the markets, and art fairs and craft shows

Carrie: I know I’m weird but I do miss the Northern Illinois winters that I grew up with but the summers were much nicer up there too than down here in Georgia.

Tina: Dogs–just because you can go outside and hang out with them.

Carrie: ah good point!

Tina: Tea–I can put honey and lemon in it. Enough said.

Carrie: yes!

Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?

Tina: Playing like a concert pianist. I’ve always wanted to play but it’s not my thing.

Carrie: I’ve always wanted to do that too 🙂

Q: When you walk into a bookstore, where do you head first?

Tina: I head to the fiction section and look for the new releases for the season. I’m always looking for a well-written, warm book that will offer me a short season of escape.

Carrie: exactly!!

Q: Writing spaces are as diverse as authors and books. Where is your favorite space to write?

Tina: The library. The atmosphere pushed you to be productive.

Carrie: I people watch too much in public places lol

Q: Which character in This Ain’t No Promised Land was the most difficult to write?

Tina: Charlotte. I thought about her alot. It took me years to understand who she was and why she made the decisions she did. I kept thinking she was selfish, but I realized she was really just scared.

Carrie: a good reminder as we interact with ‘real life’ people too – sometimes there’s more going on than we can see ♥

Q: Some authors like to hide little things in their stories. Is there anything you have hidden in your book?

Tina: The ants were there to symbolize continuous working. I actually had one editor say ‘hey tone it down with the ants, already.’ But really, if you keep working together, you can accomplish so much more than you ever expected.

Carrie: so true!

Q: What do you most want readers to take away from This Ain’t No Promised Land?

Tina: Maybe before giving up on someone and stepping away from them, commit to being there and putting in the work (counseling, therapy, conversation) to get through the challenging times.

Carrie: i love that – yes!

Q: What is one of your favorite quotes from the book & why do you love it?

Tina: Just about anything from Francine. She is my favorite character. She just gets it. Her witty comebacks stem from her own sense of self worth.

Carrie: ooo i can’t wait to meet her!

Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.

Tina: I’m currently working on a novel to be released in 2025. It’s not a sequel but there is a character carry-over that you might like.
