Tanya Agler guest post

a few of our favorite reads

by Tanya Agler, author of Her Temporary Cowboy

Thank you so much for hosting me on your blog today! I love talking about books, and I’m always reading three books at the same time: a print copy because I love the feel of a book, a book on my Kindle app because I can take a library with me wherever I go, and a book on the craft of writing as there’s always so much more to learn about the subject.

First, I’ll share what Lucky Harper, the hero of Her Temporary Cowboy, is reading in his own words.

“I live in a combination horse trailer and mobile home, so I don’t have much room for books, but I do treasure my torn copy of Modern Chess Openings. My mentor, Cale Padilla, gave it to me, and I think the world of Cale. I’m also mighty appreciated to JR, the foreman at the Double I Ranch, for lending me his copy of Killing Floor, the first Jack Reacher novel by Lee Child. It’s as suspenseful as being on Domino when that chute opens at the rodeo.”

Next, let’s see what Elizabeth Irwin, the heroine of Her Temporary Cowboy, is reading.

“As acting barn manager, I prefer being in the outdoors to reading, but my copy of Storey’s Guide to Raising Beef Cattle is almost worn out from thumbing through it so often. A friend recommended Critical Alliance by Elizabeth Goddard, and it kept me up until the early morning last December during that blizzard, the one that trapped my future stepsister, Sabrina MacGrath, in our family cabin with her now husband, Ty Darling.”

As far as my bookshelf, I love reading romance novels, cozy mysteries, and biographies. My all-time favorite book series is Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery. I found it at my school library, and I have devoured every book in the series multiple times. Besides Anne’s spirit and enduring presence, I love the message and the line, “Tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it.”

In the past year, I’ve especially enjoyed reading the Bradford Sisters series by Becky Wade, who is one of my favorite inspirational contemporary romance authors. I love how each sister was unique, and the three heroes were strong yet vulnerable.

I especially love the small-town contemporary romance, and I have several automatic buy authors on my list, including Belle Calhoune, Tina Radcliffe, RaeAnne Thayne, and Beth Carpenter. I love how each of those authors creates such a warm vibe in fictional towns I’d love to visit. Both Carpenter and Calhoune have several books set in Alaska, and it’s always fun to read books set there. The themes of hope and redemption are often the cornerstones of small-town romance, and those are some of my favorite to read.

Those are just a tiny sample of my favorite reads, as I am a voracious reader who always seeks out new authors to try. Many times I’ll be in the mood for a romantic suspense, but I like stories that aren’t overly graphic or scary. I also love historical novels and like to mix up what I read next.

Thanks so much for hosting me today!
