Cari Lynn Webb guest post

by Cari Lynn Webb, author of The Rancher’s Secret Crush

I love to cook and bake. If you subscribe to my newsletter, I’m usually talking about food, and I often share my current favorite baking recipe. As it happens, when I put food in my books, it is usually recipes I make or ones that I’m planning to make for my own family. I’ve been known to get entirely too distracted coming up with a full menu: appetizers, main course, dessert and even cocktails, for scenes in my books. Often the details don’t always make it to the final copy of the book, but it’s fun for me anyway. Family meals are important in our house and that often translates to my books as there are often scenes that feature a family get together with good food, laughter, and unexpected conversations.

There are a few foods mentioned In The Rancher’s Secret Crush that are inspired by my family. The s’mores, pizza, as well as the homemade waffles with sliced strawberries and hot syrup that my hero, Ryan Sloan makes are favorites of my own daughters. Also, vanilla wafers are a long-standing favorite of my hero, Ryan Sloan as well as my entire family. I’ve recently found several homemade recipes for vanilla wafers that I want to try – and then I plan to have a bit of a taste off between the homemade and the store-bought vanilla wafers. I’ll be sure to put an update in my newsletter so stay tuned.

My heroine, Elsie Parks makes her signature chicken and dumplings along with homemade biscuits and whipped butter for the entire Sloan family. And a featured dessert in The Rancher’s Secret Crush is butterscotch and rum bread pudding with homemade whipped cream. I’ve converted my family to homemade whipped cream, and we’ve all decided that it elevates something as simple as fresh fruit. Bread pudding is one of my husband’s long-time favorite desserts. I’m not much of a bread pudding fan, however I found a recipe for the butterscotch and rum bread pudding mentioned in my book, which just might change my mind.

As for Elsie’s chicken and dumplings, well, that is mainstay in our dinner rotation. There is something so very comforting about it. I know there are so many variations and versions of chicken and dumplings, and it seems like everyone declares their recipe the best. With that said, I have a recipe in our house that is my chicken and dumplings go to. Now that I’ve rambled on about food, I’ll simply link to The Novice Chef blog that inspired my chicken and dumplings version – thanks to Jessica at The Novice Chef for this so very tasty recipe:

And if you have a recipe I simply must try, please email me at I would love to hear from you and add more tasty food to my kitchen table.

  1. Jeepers. I think I gained ten pounds reading about all the delicious food served in Cari’s books. (and home) What a delightful author who invites readers to share our favorite recipes! I haven’t read many Harlequin books, but I’m tempted with this one.
