Carrie Walker interview

I am delighted today to introduce you to author Carrie Walker and her debut novel, Emma’s Hero!

Carrie Walker

Carrie Walker lives in Michigan with her husband and seven children. From her ten years serving as a high school youth minister, adventures around the globe, and raising a family, many stories have been knit within her heart.

As an avid reader she pens what she loves to read, contemporary stories that bring hope to a hurting world. Weaving romance among story lines of characters in struggle, she aims to show God working in all situations. When she’s not playing board games with her husband, shuttling kids in the Walker bus or wishing for snow, Carrie can be found at the keyboard bringing those stories to life.

Carrie’s writing has been recognized in many contests. Her debut novel, Emma’s Hero, placed in the ACFW Crown Award, Monroe Walton Center for the Arts Award, and won the 2020 ACFW First Impressions Contest.

You can connect with Carrie on her website.

“God won’t give me more than I can handle? I’m pretty sure He just did.”

After a year of loss and bad choices distance Emma Reynolds from her lifelong beliefs, she finds herself pregnant and alone at a twenty-week ultrasound, hearing the words “incompatible with life.” When her son, Theo, survives birth, she fights to give him the best care possible. As each day passes, Emma’s love for Theo grows—along with her fear of losing him. She can’t understand why God allows her son to suffer.

Seventeen-year-old blogger, Mason Hughes, feels lonely and worthless after his father left their family years ago. When he ignores his mother’s push to “contribute to society,” she volunteers him to help Emma each week. Wishing he’d applied for any other job, Mason has no choice but to grocery shop and practice his rusty social skills with a mother and son he doesn’t know.

Paramedic Ben Sullivan has earned himself the title of “most eligible” bachelor among his friends as they continually set him up on blind dates. While he’d love to avoid the uncomfortable events, his heart can’t help but seek the one thing missing in his life—a marriage like his parents have. If only he could find the woman himself.

As Theo’s tiny life connects them to each other, their loneliness breaks under the love of community, and they will never be the same.

Hi Carrie! Welcome to the blog! And, may I just say that you have the best name ever? 😉

Carrie W: Apples. Especially dipped in caramel 🙂 They are so yummy and remind me of my favorite season, fall.

Carrie S: yummmm – yes please!

Carrie W: Dogs. While I love all furry things, I have a soft spot for the ones that run up to me tail wagging vs hide in the ceiling at my arrival.

Carrie S: haha agreed 🙂

Carrie W: Both 🙂 I can’t start a day without a cup of coffee, and always have one after dinner as well, but my preferred hot beverage throughout the rest of the day is tea.

Carrie S: best of both worlds!

Carrie W: Board Game. I actually have two closets filled with different board games. I love them 🙂 Especially strategy type games.

Carrie S: yay!! We do too!

Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?

Carrie W: People reading. I have a freakish ability to get a read on a person in about thirty seconds, and while I’m always willing to accept I could be wrong, so far I’m pretty accurate.

Carrie S: that’s a great superpower to have in this current world

Q: When you walk into a bookstore, where do you head first?

Carrie W: To talk to the owner 🙂 Then I meander the new releases, inspirational fiction, general fiction and romance. I’m a lot of trouble in a book store.

Carrie S: you are among friends here 😉

Q: What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever Googled while researching a book?

Carrie W: “How to break a tuba while the instrument is still in the case” (for a my recent WIP and to date the funniest search I’ve tried).

Carrie S: hahaha i’m intrigued!

Q: Which character in Emma’s Hero was the most difficult to write?

Carrie W: Emma. She was facing something that most of us can only imagine and it was so, so important to get her right.

Carrie S: She’s such a compelling character ♥

Q: Did you have the whole plot outlined before you started writing Emma’s Hero, or did you let the characters dictate what came next?

Carrie W: I plotted it … every time I revamped it haha So in some ways, the characters had to tell me what was missing, but I needed to be convinced it would work.

Carrie S: haha i love that!

Q: What is something God taught you while you wrote Emma’s Hero?

Carrie W: I truly believe He placed this story on my heart and wouldn’t let me give up on it. More than once I set it aside, determined that it was the story I learned to write with, but that was all. And every single time I did that, even if I’d written another book in the meantime, something or someone would come along and inspire me to pick it back up and revamp it again. This happened over and over, literally right up until I was offered a contract. Just weeks before, I had another one of those “I guess this book was my learning book” revelations, but no 🙂 I learned that you just never know what God will do with your story. And I am excited to see what happens now.

Carrie S: His timing is always perfect ♥

Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.

Carrie W: The second book in this series is already in the works. It follows Mason and Clare and I just love it to pieces. That one will be released in February of 2025!

I was hooked as soon as I read the quote from the book where Emma says “ “God won’t give me more than I can handle? I’m pretty sure He just did.” First line of the book blurb!

My aunt is a retired RN nurse, she would just love this story! If I’m chosen, I’d mail her the book.

Thank you so much for sharing. Suffering is such a hard concept to grasp. God bless you.

  4. We all can identify with Emma’s heartbreak as her son suffers. We all hurt when those close to us are struggling. This sounds like a book that reaches deep into the heart. Congratulations Carrie Walker for not giving up on what sounds like a lovely debut book!
