Happy Good Friday & welcome to the First Line Friday link-up! It’s time to grab the book nearest to you and leave a comment with the first line. Today I’m delighted to feature the first line of Sinner by Mike Nappa (writing as Sharon Carter Rogers). I read this book last year and was so intrigued by the premise that I couldn’t put it down. To be honest, it’s not my typically preferred style of novel and I had no idea what to expect going in to it but I ended up really enjoying it. And when I was thinking of which book to feature for Good Friday, this thought-provoking story quickly came to mind.

Sinner by Mike Nappa

and the first line of Sinner is…

Father Michael Renault didn’t notice the visitor in the chapel of Saint Anthony’s Cathedral until he heard the soft swoosh of a confessional door closing outside of his office.

IT’S BEEN 150 YEARS SINCE the fabled Sinner dispensed his brutal brand of justice on Civil War slave traders and other wrongdoers. Surely he’s long dead by now…isn’t he?

An attack at St. Anthony’s Cathedral leaves behind a symbol of the mythological Sinner—a vigilante legend since the days of the Civil War—and sparks the curiosity of investigative writer CK Ivors. CK begins a relentless pursuit of the legend, only to discover that myth is often based on truth—and is sometimes more dangerous than it ought to be. As she edges closer to peril, she also finds an intriguing diary that may shed more light on the mystery surrounding the Sinner. Entries in the journal are fragmented and dreamlike, but also indicate there’s more to the situation than meets the eye. Throw in a millionaire, a mystery cottage, and a few comic-book collectibles, and you’ve got the heart-pounding adventure that is Sinner.
