After losing both her parents and her husband, Erin is determined to make a good life for herself and her young son. She starts a catering business with the help of her marketing wiz housemate, never dreaming she’ ll ever find love again.

Everyone loves Rusty — as a friend. He’ s quick with a joke and a helping hand. If only he could find his way out of the friend zone. The only thing he cares about more than Erin’ s food is Erin herself.

When Erin finds herself in a dangerous situation, it’ s Rusty who comes to her aid, on more than one occasion.

In this, the second book of the Chester County Couples series, follow Erin and Rusty through a near-death experience, a surprising secret from Erin’ s parents’ past, a trip across the country, and more.

Moonlight and Mastery by Karen Malley

I enjoyed meeting Erin and Rusty as supporting characters in Moonlight and Mystery, so I was eager to read their story in this second book of the series. And just like in book one, Rusty quickly endeared himself to me with his ‘dad-jokes’ wit and gentle spirit. The scenes between him and Oliver – Erin’s adorable toddler – melted my heart and ensured I was solidly in Rusty’s corner for the duration of this novel. I loved the way he continued to show up for Erin with no expectations (except some free food haha). The unexpectedly deep layers that the author gives his character in Recipes and Redemption made my heart go out to him and, while I thought the discussion on grief was a bit simplistic (having recently experienced my own season of profound loss), overall I thought his spiritual journey was authentic and sincere.

Erin didn’t expect to be a widow in her early 20s, raising her baby boy alone, but she’s pressing on with courage and resiliency nonetheless. Her new venture into catering and her new housemate (Beth, the heroine from Moonlight and Mystery) are definite Godsends, not to mention her close relationship with her brother and her increasingly-close friendship with Rusty. I really enjoyed her interactions with Rusty; in fact, every time they shared the page I found myself smiling. Her pure love for and joy in Oliver also made my heart lighter just by reading about it, and the precious toddler easily stole my affections. When Erin wasn’t with Oliver or Rusty though, I frequently found myself frustrated with her and the decisions she makes.

Bottom Line: Recipes and Redemption by Karen Malley serves readers a blend of sweet romance, unexpected twists, delicious food, strong faith themes, and likeable characters. Erin is a bighearted heroine who truly cares about people and is selflessly devoted to her toddler son. Rusty is an endearingly gentle, funny, and somewhat nerdy hero who captured my heart from the beginning and only grew on me even more as the story progressed. The gospel, prayer, and themes of calling and contentment are prominent in this book, and even though there was a bit more ‘stopping the story for a sermon’ than I generally prefer I appreciated the author’s clear focus on Jesus and His redemption.

(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.)

My Rating: 4 stars / enjoyed it!

A young widow is not a character you come across often. And I’m sure with the catering aspect we will get some goid food descriptions!
