He has everything … except what he wants most.

Rory is a wildly successful contractor with all the right connections. He has everything, except the woman who sees past his missing foot. If only the tiny redhead he’s insanely attracted to would go on a date with him, it could work, but Vi refuses.

Licensed massage therapist Vi Summers needs her childhood home remodeled, and Rory Spence is the perfect man for the job. Only he’s the last person she wants to work with. Despite Rory’s reputation as a flirt, his tender attention to getting her house right helps Vi see into his heart. Too bad her past mistakes prevent a future relationship.

Drawn together like magnets, they navigate trouble with illegal squatters, family expectations, and fire. Will they finally be honest with each other, or will their secrets tear them apart?

Mary Pat Johns interview

Hi Mary Pat! Welcome to the blog!

Mary Pat: I’m all about a crisp apple over a slimy wet orange any day. I can live without oranges. Apples? No way!

Carrie: yes! Same!

Mary Pat: Always and forever, I’m a dog person, and dogs tend to show up in my stories. In the past, we’ve had cats. They lived forever. I like cats but have no desire to own one.

Carrie: I prefer dogs to cats too… but i wish dogs lived as long!

Mary Pat: Soups rule! I love soup. I make soup almost every week. You can hide all sorts of lovely vegetables in soup.

Carrie: haha so true

Mary Pat: For fiction, it’s always an ebook, but for Bible study, I prefer hard copies.

Carrie: I’m the same way with Bible studies and devotionals – needs to be a hard copy.

Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?

Mary Pat: Writing is definitely my superpower these days, though reading and teaching are close seconds.

Carrie: that’s like the trifecta of awesome superpowers!!

Q: When you walk into a bookstore, where do you head first?

Mary Pat: I always head for the Christian fiction shelves first.

Carrie: me too – if i can find them lol

Q: Writing spaces are as diverse as authors and books. Where is your favorite space to write?

Mary Pat: I write in my office on the second floor of our home. There’s plenty of natural light from a large window behind my computer. Today, I spied a bluejay hopping among the tree branches of a large oak not far from the balcony.

Carrie: Oh that’s lovely!

Q: Were there any songs that inspired you as you wrote Lovin’ On Red?

Mary Pat: Trisha Yearwood sings the song, “How Do I Live Without You.” In one place, Rory refers to Vi as “oxygen,” unsure if he’s going to make it if their relationship doesn’t work.

Carrie: great song!

Q: What do you most want readers to take away from Lovin’ On Red?

Mary Pat: I wanted readers to believe that God can heal our broken places, not just barely, but completely, then bless us with extravagance.

Carrie: amen!!

Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.

Mary Pat: After the release of Lovin’ On Red, I’ll finish the draft of Book 4, the last book of the Valiant series, then I’ll gear up for the launch of Book 3, Glitter Girl and the Grouch, in September.

I enjoyed the interview with the author, especially the message that she wants the readers to take away from Lovin’ On Red.

Thank you for the interview with Mary Pat Johns and for bringing her book LOVIN’ ON RED to my attention! Sounds like a wonderful story. It’s now on my TBR list and can’t wait to start turning pages.

Oh, I hope you enjoy reading Lovin’ On Red as much as I did writing it. Vi and Rory’s love story is special.

  3. Mary Pat Johns

I loved writing Lovin’ On Red, even if there were a few tears as Vi and Rory worked through their issues.

When I began to write seriously, it was my son’s experience in Afghanistan and his stories that birthed the desire to write about veterans. As I worked on character development, I realized that trauma wasn’t just confined to vets. I was also on the board of a teen pregnancy home at the time and heard many stories about young women who suffered from abuse that led to poor decision making.
