GENRE: Children’s Picture Book
PUBLISHER: Coconut Milk
RELEASE DATE: January 11, 2024

A love letter to immigrant families everywhere!

Jerk Chicken Magic is a heartwarming story of a multi-generational immigrant family (The Higgins), through the eyes of a charming 6-year-old girl named, Lizzy – as she explores the culinary magic of Jamaica’s most famous cultural export, jerk chicken.

In awe of her Mom, Lizzy learns about the history of jerk chicken, how to make it, and the magic the dish brings to her whole family. This book celebrates themes of resilience, adaptability, and the importance of preserving generational recipes and cultural traditions.

Jerk Chicken Magic is the debut children’s picture book from husband and wife duo Noel-Andrew and Roxanne Bennett. This tasty story redefines immigrant storytelling and is the perfect gift for kids on any occasion.

I fell in love with Jerk Chicken Magic from the moment my eyes landed on the first page. The warm and vibrant illustrations drew me immediately into the story being told, and my heart was fully engaged to the end. Partly because the Higgins’ family reminded me of my past work with immigrants (who will always have a special place in my heart) and partly because this husband-wife team did such a marvelous job of making it feel as though the reader is a guest in the Higgins’ family home, hearing the history of jerk chicken told by multiple generations. I could almost smell the spices (though it would be too spicy for me to eat lol), hear the pops and sizzles and music and chatter, and feel the excited energy around the restaurant’s grand opening.

Bottom Line: Jerk Chicken Magic by Noel-Andrew Bennett & Roxanne Bennett is more than just a cute picture book about a favorite recipe. It’s a loving glimpse at Jamaican culture, at an immigrant family – and a military family, at the launching of a family business. Readers will be charmed by the vivid and bright illustrations that are full of heart and, while many children will learn about a new culture from reading this book, others will find a kindred soul in the young narrator whose experiences may closely mirror their own. Plus, there’s a bonus recipe for jerk chicken that you can try with your kiddos and extend the reading joy. I loved everything about Jerk Chicken Magic, and I look forward to whatever these authors do next!

(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the publisher. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.)

My Rating: 5 stars / loved it!

This would be a great book for our library food awareness events to expose the littles to different foods they sample.

I visited Jamaica a long time ago and I miss it. Reading this book would help me relive it 😋

My great-grandsons live in Malaysia (their parents are teachers) so they regularly experience and enjoy a wide variety of “non-American” food. I know they’d enjoy reading about a Jamaican family and their special dish.
