How One Scene Sparked a Six Book Series

by Karen Baney, author of the Desert Manna series

Sometimes one simple sentence or thought creates a flurry of inspiration for me. One of the ways I approach writing and scene development is to think about what external stimulus would invoke a strong emotional response in my character.

In Joy for Mourning, I knew I had to write a scene where Joshua Harrison sees Hannah Colter again. She was the object of his unrequited love in a previous series. It had to happen.

So, I asked myself, what must happen to trigger a strong emotional response from Joshua? It had been eight years since he had seen her. He knew she was probably married to Will Colter.

Then I thought, what if Hannah had what Joshua wanted: a family. What if that family was so big it further illustrated how little Joshua had?

So, I gave Hannah and Will five sons. And, yes, Joshua was jealous.

How did this spark a six-book series? I fell in love with the five Colter sons listed in this one little scene and ended up writing the Colter Sons series to tell their stories (and their sister’s).

Here’s a peek at the scene from Joy for Mourning that sparked an entire series. Enjoy!

“Boone Colter! Get over here.”

Joshua turned to see a face from his past. She recognized him instantly.

“Lieutenant. I mean Captain.” Hannah Colter gave him a big hug.

“Just Joshua now,” he said swallowing the hard lump in his throat.

Will Colter came up next to his wife and put an arm around her. His greeting was significantly colder. “Harrison.”

“How have you been?” Hannah asked brightly. Her eyes wandered to the front of the room. “Boone!”

A red-headed boy skidded to a stop next to her. She placed a firm hand on his shoulder.

“I’m so sorry. How have you been Joshua?”

“Well.”

“Boys!” Hannah called. “Come meet my old friend.”

Five boys lined up next to her. She placed a hand on each one’s head as she introduced them. “This is James. Samuel. Boone, my rowdy one. Deacon. And Preston is the youngest.” She pointed to the toddler in Will’s arms.

Joshua’s palms grew sweaty. Clearly, they wasted no time starting a family. Five boys in the last eight years.
