Texas Forsaken

TEXAS FORSAKEN by Sherry Shindelar
SERIES: Lone Star Redemption #1
GENRE: Historical Western Romance (Christian)
PUBLISHER: Wild Heart Books
RELEASE DATE: May 21, 2024
PAGES: 430

The man who destroyed her life may be the only one who can save it.

Seven years ago, Maggie Logan (Eyes-Like-Sky) lost everything she knew when a raid on a wagon train tore her from her family. As the memories of her past faded to nothing more than vague shadows, Maggie adapted, marrying a Comanche warrior, having a baby, and rebuilding her life. But in one terrible battle, the U.S. Cavalry destroys that life and she is taken captive again, this time by those who call themselves her people. Forced into a world she wants nothing to do with, Eyes-Like-Sky’s only hope at protecting her child may be an engagement to the man who killed her husband.

Enrolled in West Point to escape his overbearing father, Captain Garret Ramsey finds himself assigned to the Texas frontier, witnessing the brutal Indian War in which both sides commit atrocities. Plagued by guilt for his own role, Garret seeks redemption by taking responsibility for the woman he widowed and her baby. Though he is determined to do whatever it takes to protect them, is he willing to risk everything for a woman whose heart is buried in a grave?

Sherry Shindelar interview

Hi Sherry! Welcome to the blog!

Sherry: I live in northern Minnesota. We treasure summer here and enjoy every day of the beautiful, warm weather. I live a five-minute drive from a park on the lake. I call it my summer office 🙂

Carrie: a park on the lake sounds like a delightful summer office… in Minnesota, at least. Not so much down here in ‘Hot’lanta where it is already sweltering lol

Sherry: I love iced tea. I drink it almost every day of the year, even when it’s twenty below zero outside.

Carrie: My mom is the same way!

Sherry: I enjoy both, but if I had to choose, I’d take Netflix. It has more action, suspense, and history (though I could live without the “MA”). Of course, I love to have a romantic plot or subplot in almost everything I watch. I save Hallmark for the Christmas season.

Carrie: Netflix is great at having a wide variety. I watch Hallmark solely for the mysteries they do lol

Sherry: That’s a really hard question. I love both, but if I had to choose just one, I’d choose the ocean. I love the sunsets and sunrises at the beach and being able to look across the vast water with no land in sight.

Carrie: Just about nothing beats a sunrise or sunset at the beach!

Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?

Sherry: My dedication to writing, treating it as a full-time calling, despite my full-time work as a college English professor.

Carrie: that IS a superpower!

Q: When you walk into a bookstore, where do you head first?

Sherry: The historical romance section, and if they have a Christian version of that, I’d head there instead. My second stop would be the historical non-fiction section.

Carrie: yay!

Q: Writing spaces are as diverse as authors and books. Where is your favorite space to write?

Sherry: My favorite spot is a park about a five-minute drive from my house. It’s on a lake, and May through October, I go there every chance I get. In the summer, I write there for hours at a time. The challenge is finding enough shade so that I can see my computer screen.

Carrie: oh goodness, yes – the glare would be an issue, I didn’t think about that earlier.

Q: Which of your main characters in Texas Forsaken is most like you?

Sherry: I think Eyes-Like-Sky is most like the inner me that only my close family knows. I’m determined and stubborn, and a little bit feisty (not nearly as much as Eyes-Like-Sky), and I would do almost anything to protect my children.

Carrie: i love that!

Q: Did you have the whole plot outlined before you started writing Texas Forsaken, or did you let the characters dictate what came next?

Sherry: I had mapped out the first half of the book, but after I got there, the characters and their circumstances dictated the rest. I was greatly and pleasantly surprised. The ending didn’t come to me until a couple of weeks before I wrote it.

Carrie: that sounds like a fun way to write 🙂

Q: What do you most want readers to take away from Texas Forsaken?

Sherry: That God isn’t as distant as the stars. He is as near as our hearts. Another message would be: Don’t give up. There is hope, and there is healing even when one has endured the worst of circumstances. We don’t have to be lost in our grief, guilt, and/or failures.  God is the God of second chances

Carrie: yes! Amen ♥

Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.

Sherry: I’m currently in the middle of writing Book Two in the Lone Star Redemption series. The story, Texas Divided, is set in 1863-1864 Texas. The third book in the series, Texas Reclaimed, set in 1866 – 1867 Texas will follow that.

Sherry Shindelar is new to me as an author. I love reading historical fiction. I wonder if Sherry has ever watched the movie, Soldier Blue?

    • No, I’ve never seen it, but I looked it up after reading your comment, and it definitely looks like a movie I should check out. On a different note, the movie The Searchers with John Wayne was based the same true story, Cynthia Ann Parker, that inspired me, but the movie had a different take on it.

I’m partial to books set in Texas since I lived there a few years. This book sounds really good.

  3. Roxanne C.

I enjoyed the author Q&A, especially the part about the message she wants her readers to take away from Texas Forsaken.

I’m looking forward to reading this book. Thanks for sharing and hosting this tour.
