From “a wonderful storyteller” of Southern fiction: A trusting teacher who loves with all her heart and a successful lawyer who is naïve about women meet in this 1950s sweet romance of love and deceit.

Fran Wilson secretly gives her heart to Bobby Joe Anderson when they meet. More than a year later, he hasn’t mentioned the word love. What if he has no romantic emotions toward her and never will?

Bobby Joe Anderson is a successful lawyer who can passionately argue cases in a courtroom. However, when it comes to relationships and expressing his feelings, he’s innocently naïve. But if he doesn’t wise up, he may lose Fran, whom he loves.

Fran adores Bobby Joe; however, her patience with him wears thin, and she dates a co-worker she’s just met. But when the new man’s behavior becomes disturbing, she feels unsafe and questions her association with a stranger. Will Fran return to Bobby Joe for her happily ever after? Will he accept Fran after what he considers her betrayal?

Now, nearly ten o’clock, Bobby Joe decided to drive her route home in case her car had stalled, or she had a flat tire on the way. He drove at a snail’s pace, searching his surroundings for her car in vain. When he finally arrived at her apartment complex, he drove around to her building. Her car sat in its usual parking spot. He stopped behind her car and looked up at her apartment windows. They were dark. Why hadn’t she answered the phone?

Maybe she’d fallen and couldn’t get to the telephone in the living room. Panic spurred him into action. Bobby Joe swung his car into the first empty parking space he saw, a dozen cars or so away. He was about to open his car door when a pair of bright headlights stopped behind Fran’s car. Bobby Joe waited. A man left the car from the driver’s side, walked through the headlight beams to the other side, and opened the passenger side door. A woman stepped out.

It was Fran in her purple winter coat. The man took her elbow and walked with her up the outside stairway. They stopped at Fran’s apartment door. The man faced Fran and took both of her hands into his. Would she let him kiss her? Bobby Joe wanted to leap from his car and run upstairs to separate them, but he gripped the steering wheel without leaving his car. The man took Fran’s key and unlocked her door for her, returning her key.

Then, the man leaned closer to Fran. No! He kissed her cheek and waited while she went inside and closed the door. Sudden light glowed through her draperies. The man descended the stairway. Bobby Joe eased down in his seat. The man returned to his car, and it rolled past Bobby Joe’s on the way through the complex’s parking lot. Bobby Joe stayed where he was and looked up at Fran’s apartment. Her bedroom window showed filtered light. His earlier anger had disappeared, replaced by confusion.

Now what? Should he stomp up the stairs, knock on her door, and demand an explanation? Since Fran had lied to him about her whereabouts that evening, she obviously didn’t want him to know she had a date with this stranger. And who was this guy? Bobby Joe didn’t recognize him, but he’d sure remember his car.

He almost wished he hadn’t discovered the truth. If he didn’t confront her now, then what? Would they sit together in church tomorrow morning? Would they go to the movie tomorrow afternoon as they planned? They’d dated for over a year. Why would she suddenly go out with somebody else after all this time?

Bobby Joe sat straighter on the car seat and started the engine. Might as well go home. He imagined he wouldn’t be sleeping much tonight.
