A Cameo for a Cowgirl

SERIES: Three Creek Ranch #1
GENRE: Contemporary Romance/Romantic Comedy (Christian)
PUBLISHER: Independently Published
RELEASE DATE: June 14, 2024
PAGES: 230

Welcome to Three Creek Ranch, home of the James family for over a hundred years, complete with its own Western movie set.

Franklin James might be a famous pro hockey player, but just because he’s Cassie’s older brother doesn’t mean she wants to step into the limelight. She’s too busy helping her dad run the ranch and managing the ranch’s movie set, and negotiating with the giant egos of movie stars like Harrison Woods, who’s supposed to be filming the new TV series of As The Heart Draws. And while his TV hero characters might be hugely popular, Harrison’s real character seems anything but noble. Cassie is convinced he’s hiding something, and that this diva’s nice guy moments are just an act.

Can she remind him what being a true hero is all about?

Carolyn Miller guest post

setting tour for a cameo for a cowgirl

by Carolyn Miller, author of A Cameo for a Cowgirl

When I was writing the first book in the Northwest Ice hockey romance series, Fire and Ice, I set the hero’s family home on a ranch just outside of Calgary. That meant I had to research ranches just outside Calgary, which meant I came across a real-life ranch called the CL ranch, that has its own western town movie set. This immediately sparked all kinds of ideas for future books, including A Cameo for a Cowgirl, in which a certain cowgirl (Cassie James) butts heads with Hollywood hunk, Harrison Woods.

This real-life ranch’s western town movie set has been the setting for all kinds of movies, from Lonesome Dove to Jackie Chan’s Shanghai Noon to early episodes of When Calls the Heart and Heartland. The fact it was used by When Calls the Heart meant it HAD to be used for my own fictional purposes, and is therefore used by a TV production of – ahem – As The Heart Draws, in which our hero actor is a rugged Canadian Mountie.

So, just like in the real ranch’s western town, the Three Creek Ranch’s western town has everything from a little white church to old-time rickety saloons filled with dusty animal skulls, to little shops and stores, such as a barber’s that has accommodation in the back section where people (including actors who are afraid of mice) can stay. The little church is used by Cassie’s brother for his wedding, so that’s a fun little moment for readers of my hockey books, and it’s the place where our hero finally comes to his knees.

The ranch itself is huge, thousands of acres and has three creeks, including one that has several significant scenes that I think readers will enjoy. I have some photos on my website here, and people can also visit the actual website of the actual ranch and get a flyover video of what it’s actually like. I’ve included some photos as well from when my family and I visited near this setting a number of years ago – including haybales in winter (but it was actually October)!

I love the fact that this setting was so unique, and the fact that I had access to seeing what it’s like in real life made my research add a realistic authenticity to A Cameo for a Cowgirl.

I hope readers enjoy picturing the ranch both now, and in the other books in the Three Creek series, including the next one, A Valentine for a Vet, which sees veterinarian Jessie James, discover that her hockey-playing brother’s teammate might care about more than just her skills with his dog. I love a good friends-to-more story, and I think readers will enjoy this one too, as its packed full of heart and humor.

A ranch with its own movie set holds a world of possibilities!

What a fascinating setting for a story! I’m also curious if I have read some of the other books that might have overlapping characters with this book.

The James family were so sincere and loving of Hannah in Fire and Ice that Hannah is wonderful over and so are the readers. Looking forward to reading about Cassie James and her story.
