Ali Gilkeson interview

I am delighted today to introduce you to Ali Gilkeson and her new children’s picture book My Lighthouse: A Story of Finding Your Way Home. Rend Collective’s hit song “My Lighthouse” is one that’s ministered to me so often in the ten (10!!!) years since it released.

Ali Gilkeson

Ali Gilkeson is an author, performer and speaker with a sharp wit and an imaginative flair. She traveled the world playing music and sharing stories with the band Rend Collective for 12 years, performing to millions. While an onstage personality by night she also raised her 3 kids “on the road” since 6 weeks of age, whether on tour buses, airplanes or venue parking lots. She has the rare ability to make anything work. Ali grew up in Northern Ireland in a time of conflict and uncertainty, a childhood spent always looking over her shoulder but also learning to laugh in the middle of the chaos. Gifted as a communicator, she started traveling around Ireland as a speaker in her early twenties, taking any chance she could to encourage and embolden the young people she met. Whether you’re 6 or 16 or 60, Ali believes story time should be enjoyed by all and creating a connection point for everyone who is gathered around her work is the heartbeat behind her writing. Ali currently lives in Nashville TN with her family and is the kind of woman who makes jokes that most people don’t expect, tells captivating stories like you’re round the campfire and is deeply passionate about raising good humans. You can connect with Ali on her website.

Hi Ali! Welcome to the blog!

Ali: Summer

Carrie: too hot for me!

Ali: Dogs

Carrie: yay!

Ali: Coke

Carrie: i agree!

Ali: Ocean

Carrie: appropriate for lighthouses too 🙂

Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?

Ali: My superpower would be multitasking. I can work on many different things at the one time. If I could choose a superpower it would have to be flight.

Carrie: i would so love a flight superpower!

Q: When you walk into a bookstore, where do you head first?

Ali: I actually head to the children’s section. I want to see what is out there to inspire and spark the imagination of the kids. What are we trying to put into their fresh minds. I love picture books and appreciating the art that goes behind each story. When you find a beautiful book with a great story that you want to share with your kids over and over, it’s like finding gold.

Carrie: i love hanging out in the children’s section for exactly those same reasons … plus the former elementary school teacher inside me can’t help it lol

Q: What is like touring with Rend Collective and your kids as a performer, a mom, a homeschool educator, and now an author? How do you keep your sanity?

Ali: That’s a great question. I have actually stopped touring with Rend Collective because I believe I may have lost my sanity. Currently looking for it. (Haha.) But seriously, there was a season I was doing all of that at once and it was a lot, to say the least. The days were packed with trying to homeschool, play, feed, soundcheck, get ready, bedtime routines and perform a show. It was exhausting. And really would have been impossible without a community who put family first.

Carrie: wow – yeah that IS a lot! You made the right decision ♥

Q: Tell us about Fynn and what inspired you to create him/tell his story in My Lighthouse.

Ali:Fynn is a little boy whose lives in a lighthouse in Ireland and hates it. Why does everything have to be round? But he loves boats, so he sets off on an adventure in his 1986 rowboat. After getting lost in the dark he comes to realize it is his house, his lighthouse that is guiding him (along with everyone else) safe to shore. When I saw how much the song “My Lighthouse” was connecting with young people and children worldwide I was inspired to write more content for them. I wanted to write a story with the same heartbeat as the song so that kids could begin to understand that Jesus is a constant light that will always guide them home.

Carrie: oh i love that!

Q: What is your favorite scene or quote from My Lighthouse, and why do you love it?

Ali: Gosh Lee Wildish did such an incredible job I feel like every time I turn the page I want to put that spread on my wall. Honestly, the first spread when you open the book makes my heart jump every time. You see Fynn and his Dad running along the beach with the lighthouse in the background and I feel like it’s such a beautiful picture of God’s love for us.

Carrie: The illustrations are so perfect!

Q: What do you most want readers to take away from My Lighthouse?

Ali: I want every reader to know that there will be times in your life where you feel lost and alone in the dark. But that there is a constant light that is always shining ready to guide you home. It’s up to us whether we decide to follow it.

Carrie: amen ♥
