“A Heart Divided” – Character Sketch of Lydia Troyer

by Tracy Fredrychowski, author of The Amish Book Cellar

Welcome, dear readers! I’m thrilled to share a deeper look into my personal character sketch for Lydia Troyer, the protagonist from my latest Amish cozy mystery romance, The Amish Book Cellar.

I love taking the time to define the personality of my star characters before I even start writing their stories. Oftentimes, they write themselves, much like Lydia’s personality came to life between the pages of this cozy mystery. She ended up having an inner strength I didn’t define early on, and it ended up making her such a fun character to explore.

Enjoy reading,

Tracy Fredrychowski

Character Sketch: Lydia Troyer
Name: Lydia Troyer
Age: Late 20s

Background: Lydia Troyer grew up in a tight-knit Amish community in Willow Springs, Northwestern Pennsylvania. Her upbringing was deeply rooted in the values of faith, family, and hard work. However, in her early twenties, Lydia decided to leave the security of her Amish community and embrace the English world. She moved to Pittsburgh with her English boyfriend, Jimmy Scott, hoping to start a new life. Unfortunately, this decision led to a series of hardships.

Appearance: Lydia is a modest and practical woman, as is customary in the Amish community. A small scar on her abdomen is a physical reminder of her past struggles and the tough decisions she’s had to make.

Personality: Lydia is resilient, determined, and compassionate. Her experiences in Pittsburgh have instilled in her a sense of independence and self-reliance. Despite her hardships, she remains hopeful and committed to uncovering the truth behind her father’s mysterious death. Lydia’s return to Willow Springs signifies her desire to reconnect with her roots and find a sense of belonging.

Determination: Once Lydia sets her mind on something, she is unwavering in her pursuit, whether it’s solving the mystery of her father’s death or restoring the family’s bookstore.

Compassion: Her empathy and kindness are evident in her interactions with others, especially with Aaron and Mattie Rose.

Balancing Two Worlds: Lydia struggles with reconciling her past life in the English world with her Amish upbringing. This internal conflict often leaves her questioning where she truly belongs.

Trust Issues: Her experiences with Jimmy Scott have made it difficult for Lydia to fully trust others, including Aaron, who doubts her ability to reintegrate into the Amish way of life.

Family Tensions: Lydia’s relationship with her brother Harvey is strained due to their differing views on the future of the bookstore.

Protecting Her Father’s Legacy: Lydia is driven by a deep desire to honor her father’s memory and preserve the family’s bookstore. She is determined to uncover the truth behind his death.

Finding Belonging: After years of feeling lost and disconnected, Lydia longs to find a place where she truly belongs. Returning to her Amish community and reconnecting with her roots is a significant step towards this goal.

Building a Future with Aaron: Despite the challenges in their relationship, Lydia hopes to build a future with Aaron grounded in faith and love. Their bond is tested by the dangers surrounding the bookstore and the underground railroad passage, but through these challenges, they discover more about each other and their own hearts.

Conclusion: Lydia Troyer is a determined woman who navigates past and present secrets to uncover the truth and find her place back in her Amish community.
