GENRE: Historical/WW2 Romance (Christian)
RELEASE DATE: July 2, 2024
PAGES: 366

American horse trainer Adia Kensington is living her dream of working at the famous Janów Podlaski stables in Poland, where they breed the best Arabian horses in the world. But her plans to bring the priceless stallion Lubor to the US are derailed when the German army storms into her adopted country in 1939. Little does she know this is just the beginning of six long years of occupation that will threaten her beloved horses at every turn.

Bret Conway is at Janów Podlaski under the guise of a news reporter, but his true mission is intelligence gathering for the British. That and keeping Adia safe, which is harder and harder to do as she insists they must evacuate 250 horses to save them from being stolen, sold, or eaten by the invading forces. What follows will test their physical, mental, and emotional strength, as well as their faith in God, humankind, and each other.

Drawn from true events of World War II, this epic story of escape, capture, resistance, and love from debut novelist Nicole M. Miller will thunder into your heart like a herd of beautiful horses across a raging river.

Hi Nicole! Welcome to the blog!

Nicole: Dogs (generally) but lately we have a pair of barn cats that are starting to shift my opinion.

Carrie: I will only own dogs as pets (thanks to my hubby’s cat allergy) but our nieces & nephews’ two cats have softened me toward felines in general lol

Nicole: Tea! I’ve always disliked the smell of coffee, though I wish I was more keen on it for more effective caffeine delivery.

Carrie: i wish i liked either coffee or tea for their caffeine boosts, but i’m with you on the smell of coffee

Nicole: Audiobooks (though the right playlist of movie soundtracks is magic when it comes to getting into writing mode.)

Carrie: i really want to love audiobooks but so far i’ve only enjoyed about three lol

Nicole: Mountains – especially a long drive on mountain roads on a sunny day.

Carrie: yes please!

Q: Around here I like to say that reading is my superpower. If YOU had a superpower, what would it be?

Nicole: My superpower would be listening and comforting those around me. It’s a part of my day job and something I find fulfilling in life.

Carrie: it is such an important superpower to have!

Q: When you walk into a bookstore, where do you head first?

Nicole: New fiction releases, then Christian fiction, then the journals section (because I like to hand-write out my outlines and initial drafts.)

Carrie: i am always so impressed (and in awe of) authors who hand-write their first drafts!

Q: If I sneaked a peek in your purse right now (which I would never do, I promise!), what would it tell me about you?

Nicole: You’d find a notebook in there full of random scribbles and story scene ideas—I never go anywhere without a little notebook (often, without my iPad when I’m actively working on a manuscript.) I find I’ll get the best ideas when I’m driving, so I will quickly jot something down at a stoplight (safely, I promise.)

Carrie: no judgement here… some of us (who shall remain nameless) have been known to read a paragraph or two at a stoplight <whistles innocently>

Q: What surprised you about Until Our Time Comes or your characters as you wrote their story?

Nicole: One of my most minor characters ended up as one of the most favorite and ultimately pivotal characters in the story. I hadn’t set out with that intent, but the character developed such a special personality and became the linchpin of all of the most vital plot points. In the end, he’s my very favorite character of all.

Carrie: as a reader, I love it when that happens!!

Q: Did you have the whole plot outlined before you started writing Until Our Time Comes, or did you let the characters dictate what came next?

Nicole: I had the plot outlined before I started writing, because this story is structured around true historical events, but I was surprised by some of the evolutions of my characters within that framework—they often led me in ways that I wasn’t expecting, but everything came together in a really special way.

Carrie: that’s so fascinating to me!

Q: What do you most want readers to take away from Until Our Time Comes?

Nicole: I wanted readers to understand and wrestle with the many victims of war and consider what our burden is as a society to protect them. I also wanted to challenge preconceived notions about good guys and bad guys—and there’s a unique ending to this story (again, based on real events.)

Carrie: oooo I’m hooked!!!!

Thank you so much for taking time to talk with me! 🙂 Before we say goodbye for today, tell us what‘s coming up next for you.

Nicole: Thank you for having me! After this book, I’m excited to pitch more stories to my publisher about the special connection between people and animals. I enjoy writing historical fiction and contemporary, so we’ll see what comes next!

This premise for this novel comes from a different & interesting premise than most WWII novels. Usually they’re about Jews taken to Concentration Camps or ordinary people that have helped hide Jews. Not from the ordinary person doing what they love, but being interrupted by the war. Sounds very different, but interesting to me.

I enjoy Christian WWII novels, and one that is based on true historical events and predominantly features horses is of special interest.

The story’s themes of love, resilience, and personal growth resonate deeply with me. Miller’s ability to craft compelling, relatable characters and her poignant storytelling style make me eager to dive into this book. I have never read about this part of the war, and your summary here makes me want to read this story!

This is such a unique premise for a WW2-era novel. I’m always on the lookout for new facets of history that haven’t yet been told in historical fiction. Or in anything I’ve read.
