When Secrets Come Calling

GENRE: Romantic Suspense (Christian)
PUBLISHER: Salt & Light Publishing
RELEASE DATE: July 1, 2024
PAGES: 282

Past secrets. A second chance. But can the truth really set them free?

When former University of Alabama and Titans wide receiver Dax Carpenter learns his father is accused of a forty-year-old robbery and murder, he turns to the only person he trusts to discover the truth: his ex-girlfriend, Caitlin Fitzhugh.

Caitlin, a cold-case specialist with the Alabama State Division of Investigations, wants nothing to do with the case nor Dax. Not only is the evidence against Dax’s father already condemning, she can’t risk having her heart broken—again.

Caitlin’s boss, however, ignores her arguments, and she begrudgingly takes the consult, convincing herself she can keep the case and her past with Dax separate. But unlike her, longings and memories don’t follow orders. While she lends her skills to the Gulf Shores Police Department in the search for the truth, Dax fends off a possibly career-ending social media hit—leading him to question everything he knows about his father and himself.

As the secrets of both their pasts unfold, they discover whether Dax’s father truly robbed and murdered a man forty years ago but also why Caitlin ended their relationship. Secrets that could drive a wedge between them, forever.

The When Secrets Come Calling Playlist

by Felicia Ferguson, author of When Secrets Come Calling

Music and story go hand-in-hand—just try to watch any movie without the background music and you’ll see how flat the story falls. But until I sat in a Deborah Raney fiction class at a conference, I’d never really considered incorporating music into my stories. Sure, I’d have a song playing on a radio and of course every character had to have something other than the traditional selection of ringtones for their phone. But Deb encouraged her students to create a playlist to accompany the books we’ve written. They could simply be songs we listened to as we wrote. Or, more intriguing, songs that reflected the story and characters’ journeys. Much like a movie soundtrack.

When I was choosing my topics for this blog, one of Carrie’s suggestions was exactly Deb’s. Now, I’m not one to ignore signs pointing me on a specific path (trust me, my whole move from the South to Colorado was filled with them—and I heeded their direction and have received tremendous blessings). So once again, I’m following the signs. But this time I hope you, the reader, will be blessed. And if not, I certainly had fun compiling it.

If you want to actually listen to the When Secrets Come Calling playlist on Spotify, here you go:

But before, or even as, you listen, let me tell you a bit about why I selected such a wide variety of songs.

When Secrets Come Calling is set in Alabama, so “Sweet Home Alabama” has to be the opening song. I mean, come on, it’s the state song of Alabama after all. And once the overarching setting has been identified, we drill down at bit more to Gulf Shores beach life and the easy feeling of sitting with our toes in the sand enjoying the water sweeping up and down our feet. Who better to convey that breezy vibe than Kenny Chesney and Jimmy Buffet. So we move into “Summertime,” “Son of a Son of Sailor,” “When the Sun Goes Down,” and end up at what is a Gulf Coast and Southern historic treasure, the “Flora-Bama.”

From there we take a little side jaunt over to New Orleans attorney Peter Broussard’s neck of the woods with a little time “Down at the Twist and Shout” with Mary Chapin Carpenter. Louisiana and Cajun don’t simply flavor that song, they saturate it with everything joyful and jubilant. Truly letting those good times roll.

When we’re all danced out, we head back to Alabama via Brooks and Dunn’s “Red Dirt Road,” and while we’re on the way we can reminisce with Dax Carpenter about his high school football days, singing along with Mitch Rossell about “God, Girls, and Football.” While he’s feeling nostalgic, of course Dax’s thoughts would turn to Caitlin because as Brad Paisley sings, “She’s Everything.”

Before we get too far back into the Alabama part of the story, we have to check in with Ricky over in Texas as he’s recalling his own life choices and what he’s going to do about them. No one sings Texas better than George Strait, and as I listened to the lyrics of “The Cowboy Rides Away,” I could only marvel at the parallels between the two men. Can you hear them? Their longing to do better, but just not completely sure they can?

And speaking of longings, Caitlin and her sister-in-law, Shannon, have their own. This is where we start diving into the spiritual as well as the emotional journeys as the two women face “The Unmaking” as Nichole Nordeman sings. But as they each sit in the dust of their dreams, will they choose to follow what Chris Tomlin sings and say, “I Will Rise,” and then even better, be able to “Praise You In This Storm” (Casting Crowns)?

Back to Dax and even his parents, his father, who is accused of committing a robbery and murder forty years ago, and his mother who has loved him for all that time. Will they “Bless the Broken Road” (Rascal Flatts)? And in the end will every character be able to see the “Goodness of God” (Bethel Music, Jenn Johnson)?

I could tell you yesses or nos to each of those questions, but hey, I won’t spoil the read for you! Oh, and the final three songs are just extras. They’re the ringtones that three of the characters use for their cellphones (see, I didn’t forget to use music that way!).

I hope you enjoy the playlist and the book. And if you can think of other songs that should be added, send me an email and make your case. I’ll be happy to expand the soundtrack!

Since I live in Nashville (thus making me a required Titans fan), I’m interested in Dax and how his father was accused of these crimes.

The last books I read of Felicia Ferguson’s were ‘The Paths We Walk: Bridges and Trails.’ I loved them. I have pulled them from my bookshelf to read next weekend.

Second chance romance for a couple that had a previous breakup is my favorite trope.
